ART PROJECT CHOICE #1 = ​Cartoonist


Essential Question:​ How does a cartoonist tell a story?

This is a good project choice for you if: 
-You are at beginner level with art and drawing
-You do not have internet access at home
-You like books with pictures  like “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” or “Smile” or “Dr. Seuss”
-You like to doodle and draw with little pictures all over your school papers
-You are great at imagining characters and scenes as you read books

Materials you may need: 
-pencil
-notebook or printer paper
*optional: colored pencils or markers to add color
*optional: examples of books with pictures or graphic novels    Here is a list of some great graphic novels! 

                     
Please read the following and highlight​ at least 3 keywords​ you think are important to remember: 
Cartoonists and illustrators have an ability to tell a short story with little pictures and some words. They do not create one big picture. They draw little pictures and word bubbles inside of squares. The cartoonist’s short story with little pictures can be about anything really… topics like politics, sports, superheros, and everyday life are popular. The cartoon squares are in order of TIME to show what happens at the beginning of the story, during the story, and at the end of the story.

Take a look at this cartoon strip with 4 small pictures. Write a short 2-3 full sentence summary to explain what is going on in the cartoon:________________________________________________________________________________

YOUR TURN! Create your own cartoon strip with at least 4-6 small pictures on a piece of paper. ​ It can be about anything! If you cannot think of a topic, try showing a cartoon with you and a pet. Or maybe create a cartoon strip that shows your thoughts and feelings about coronavirus. ​When you’re done, ask a family member to tell you the summary of your cartoon story so you know it makes sense! Snap a photo of your cartoon and email to Miss J   lindsay.johanesen@kelsosd.org
